Title: Love, Stargirl
Author: Jerry Spinelli

“I loved the first book, Stargirl. And this follow-up was endearing, too. I like how Stargirl enables the people around her to grow, be happy, and be creative. I guess I’m a sucker for hippies–I find them appealing and always wished I had been around for Woodstock. I adore the solstices so that tie-in was meaningful. This is a young adult selection. If you want to read a book about a young woman who is home schooled and sorting her unconventional life out, this is a book for you. This book quietly examines this journey called life that holds challenges and victories for everyone.”

Title: Unwind
Author: Neal Shusterman

“This book takes place in the future after a war has abolished abortion. Instead, with parent’s order or state order, those between the ages of thirteen and eighteen can have their lives ‘unwound’ and their body parts harvested for use by others. Three teenagers go to extreme lengths to stay alive by running away and staying in hiding as best they can. This is a haunting story in so many ways. It doesn’t matter what your present position is on the abortion issue, this book will make you think. There is one chapter that goes through the ‘unwinding’ process, and even though it happens to a character you are not very fond of, it is still heartwrenching!  This book is appropriate for teenagers and adults.”

Title: Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist
Author: Rachel Cohn

“This story is for older teens and contains quite a bit of course language but at the same time totally nails  teen romance.  Nick is a high school senior in a punk rock band. Once offstage he  propositions a girl he has never met, hoping to make his old girlfriend jealous: ‘Would you mind being my girlfriend for five minutes?’ From there the story is a fast paced night on the music scene in Manhattan.”

Title: The Christopher Killer
Author: Alane Ferguson

“This was an excellent book. Despite the typical ending where the person you least expect turns out to be the killer. The thrilling part is how the murderer was discovered. Cameryn puts herself in danger for the sake of knowledge not only in this book but also in the Angel Of Death.”

Title: Trouble
Author: Gary D. Schmidt (author of The Wednesday Wars and Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy)

“Trouble comes to Henry’s family when his brother is struck by a car.  The driver of the vehicle, a Cambodian immigrant from a neighboring community, is arrested. This book is full of twists and turns to keep the reader turning pages until you reach a remarkable conclusion.  It would also be a great book discussion selection.”
